Initially based on an exploration I used to engage people without experience in contemporary dance, quadrantal movement is an interactive experience designed to create a set of constraints to allow people of all movement styles and abilities to explore the sensations and bounds of their movement. Originally performed as more of a verbal and visual “do as I do” in person with my students, the prompts in this experience come in the form of 4 quadrants, each mapped to a quadrant of the body. Participants are asked to move interpretively within their comfort and range, possibly left and right hands and feet, or for those with limited mobility, simply just a direction to move their limbs or torso comfortably. The screen in front of them will generate prompts in each quadrant in the form of various descriptive terms borrowed from Laban Movement Analysis to dictate the quality of movement. My goal in the creation of this experience is to help people find joy in moving without feeling as if they’ve done something wrong or feeling that they lack the experience to enjoy improvisation.
