body landscapes

Considering the body as a landscape was a turning point to being able to celebrate bodies separate from our preconceived notions of value. We rarely think of there being a “right” way for the natural environment around us to look, we even go so far as to celebrate, covet and capture unique landscapes that differ from their surroundings. Being able to abstract the forms of the body allows us to remove some of the connotations and expectations we have as the sum of its parts and lets unique and interesting aspects be highlighted and examined apart from compulsory criticism. Using cut paper as a medium both gave the physical works a likeness to topographical cartography as well as offered an unexpected moment in the process to take joy in seeing the unassembled paper shapes as their own little pieces as they were piled, sorted and rotated and inverted before finding their place in the overall composition.
