One of the very early factors in my transition from dance into fine art and eventually design, was the experimenting with what forms could be created using the body. As my interest in graphic design grew, I started to notice nuances in typography that had long gone unnoticed to me, and through The Body as Type, I created this photographic series exploring how those letterforms could be mimicked and expressed using the mobility of my body. In working out positioning of spine and limbs, I noticed I cared far less about perfect ballet-esque lines and whether or not there were visible creases or rolls along my stomach. The focus and constraint of “becoming” the letter allowed me to find both challenge and success in the capabilities of my body as the medium with which I could create.
